Terri, looking at an ald map of Richmond County (but hard to read) it looks like the now 74 was 20 then and 177 was 204.

The 1st and 4th pic is Luther Bryant. Luther was a member of the HHS Class of 1970. These pics are of the Bryant Family that lived on Raleigh Street. In pics 11 & 19 I don't remember her name but she worked at Raleigh Street Pharmacy.

I know Eric's Grandparents (Coyt Freeman) lived at 708 East Hamlet Ave. but I don't know if there was a relation to the 2 other Freeman's.

Freddie, the Betty Freeman you are thinking of was married to David Freeman. Betty Brice Freeman did pass a 3 or 4 years back. She and David lived on Hylan Ave. and she was a nurse at Hamlet hospital.

Lynn, David C. Freeman lived here in Hamlet and was a shop foreman for SAL/SCL/CSX. He has 2 daughters that live here Lillian (Becky) Freeman Whitaker & Gail Freeman Wise. I suspect that they are kind to you because the are kind to the Steen's. There mama was kind to Sam Steen.

Bruce, it was located on 74 East of town across from the Coca Cola plant. The barn is still there today.

The Freeman Cemetery is located on the corner of Freeman Mill Road and Lackey Street extension in Hamlet N. C. There is a Freeman relative on Facebook (Betty Farrell). The Freeman Cemetery is located on the corner of Freeman Mill Road and Gin Mill Road in Hamlet N. C. There is a Freeman relative on Facebook (Betty Farrell). There is also some other Freemans around Hamlet if this is not the family that you are looking for.

Freddie is correct. The Purity Café was located on Main Street facing the railroad tracks where the depot is now. Didn't it have a dinning room that faced Main Street also?

In some pictures is Luther Bryant. His was a HHS class of 1970. Luther had a sister that worked at Raleigg Street Pharmacy. Luther and his sister are in these pictures. I not sure but seems like there use to be a cemetery located on the town side of the house on a mound of soil with a rod iron fence around it, but I'm not sure about that.

Jody, the only Ashton that I know of in Hamlet is Don Knights grandson Ashton Locklear. He was Drum Major and graduated from RSHS this past school year.

Bruce their names were Ed and Terry Napier. Ed lives 2 houses past the store on 381 and Terry (the daughter) lives across the field behind the store. They ages are Ed 63 and Terry 59/60.

The cars were greased just before going over the hump. There was 2 pits, one on each side of the track. The pits were done away with shortly after a car knocker (car inspector) David Billingsley was killed when cars were derailed and fell into the pit.

It was located on top of Hamlet City Hall, The fire dept. would blow it to alert the firemen of a fire or rescue call. 1 - 4 blows indicated what section of town the fire was located in and 5 blows was a rescue call. The railroad diamond at the passenger is how the town was divided into locations.

Several pictures of Stewert Gordon with his horses pulling his wagon. Also looks like Herb Niemyer in pic 15. Jimmy Davis that was raised on 4th Street in East Hamlet is riding with him.

Freddie, the home old home place is at he bottom of the pic with the store just toward the lake and 5th street beside the store. 5th street is the first from the bottom of the picture.

The Cuda (blue with white stripe, had a pistol grip shifter) parked on the corner belonged to Robert Zackery Jr. He would park it there every day. I know he would love to have it today.

Esso was changed to Exxon in 1971. If I remember correctly Ma Crofton was related to Arthur Martin. It sure would be nice to have a hamburger and hot dog as good as those that came from there.

The Hamlet City shop was located in the back half and Hamlet Fire Department #2 in the front next to Boyd Lake Rd. There was also an apartment in the front side next to the City Lake and Sonny Kennedy and his family lived in it for a while.

Richmond Pines Country Club was closed and sold. It is now back open under new management and they are getting it back into shape. It had got into pretty bad shape. The last that I knew, Sam Bankhead was there giving golf lessons.

Lynn, going from Hamlet to Ellerbe on Wiregrass Rd, when you reach the stop sigh (now traffic light) at Hwy #1 the dirt race track was located on the right before you crossed #1.

The tunnel that I am talking about being about 1/2 north is accessed from 177 and the ice house was there at it tunnel. The ice house caught fire years ago and finely fell in. There is a small tunnel that goes under the railroad tracks that the blocks of ice went through to get to the ice plate form...

It is just as you stated. The neighborhood from Hamlet Ave. to the cemetery has run down so bad that it is kind of scary to drive up spring street. When residents on Washington has to sit in their house with a weapon in their lap that really bad.

There is a tunnel further north. It went to the ice house but you could go down a dirt road to the round house. The tunnel is approx. 1/2 mile north toward the yard.

The old ice plant was about 1/2 mile north towards the yard. Mary Love Cemetery over looks where the old roundhouse was located.
