the top of the hill, corner of Minturn Ave & Marlboro Ave.

The telephone switchboard was on the 2nd floor of the Belk's on Main Street next to the Central Hotel. The building
was demolished about 2000.

F. A. Tuthill opened The Dinette in 1947, I was there. The Dinette is still listed in the 1950 Hamlet phone book. I worked for Mr. Tuthill when the Dinette first opened in 1947. It was still the Dinette in 1950.
The Pink Platter came later. I never knew it to be the Dinette again.

I guess you are thinking about the Quick Lunch which was next door toward the railroad tracks.
It was like a diner and not a part of the Purity Cafe. Other than good food it was known as a
place where train passengers could quickly buy cartons of cigarettes and was open 24 hours
a day.

In 1925 the Purity Cafe was located on Main St.across from the Union Hotel. In 1942 they moved into the former Post Office space at 4 Main St. across from the Terminal Hotel. The man you remember was called "Louie The Greek" whose name was Louis George Alexakus, Sr.(1909-1994). He came to ...

The Class of 1935 was the last to graduate with eleven grades.
She then went back another year and graduated in the Class of 1936
the first class with twelve grades.

Louis George Alexakos, Sr. (1909-1994) residence at
time of his death was 113 East Main St. (little white house)
phone 582-4591. He had lived in a room at the Terminal Hotel
for 31 years until it was destroyed by fire April 9, 1993.

Swift & Co. is a food processing Company. This
building was used for the distribution of meat
products in the area. This building was built in
1924 by the Lackey estate to house Swift & Co.
and Star Fruit Co. and had, for the day, modern
refrigeration.

This is the building on Main Street that the city converted
into a museum to house the "Tornado" engine. Across the
street from the new Welcome Center (Stinson's Furniture

The land on the southeast corner of Raleigh & Charlotte streets
after the Seaboard Annex Hotel was demolished in 1925 was
named Warfield Memorial Park in honor of the Seaboard president.
Southern National Bank (now BB&T) was built on this property.

Louie The Greek's name was Louis G. Alexakos.
When he died he was living in the little house between
the Post Office and Dr. Cloniger's office on Main Street.

In 1905 the Happy Houligan Resturant (saloon) was at

Belk's was on Main Street from 1932-1950 when they purchased
W. R. Land Department Store and moved to Hamlet Avunue. If
they were ever on Hamlet Ave & Bridges it was prior to 1932.
