Re: 1959 Hamlet Items
The S & S stood for Smith & Steen. The Smith part comes from the actual owner of the property, who was Woodrow Smith of Laurinburg. His wife Sadie just happened to be another of the Caulk girls, and sister to my mother. My folks only operated the place for Uncle Woodrow and Aunt Sadie. Now, ...

Freddie, you're slightly off with your information above. Fuller's Grocery was owned and operated by Marvin Fuller, brother of Wayne's dad Kinchen (known as Buck). Marvin's wife was Lucy Caulk, my mother's sister.

You've got the right location in mind Freddie, but I wouldn't say it was on a hill. It was directly across highway 74 from the Coca Cola plant, on the backside of the hill on which a Dr. Pearce's house sat.

On the Family Dollar Store, I suspect that it was Joe Levine who operated it. It just happens that it was Joe's son who created Family Dollar, and the building for the FD store appears to be the location of Levines, Joe's own store I remember from the late 50s.

I too have a William David Freeman (9/24/1886-5/21/1950) in my family tree, inasmuch as his mother Rebecca Steen is a distant relative of mine. But I list the father of this WD Freeman as William M.
