Freddie, you're slightly off with your information above. Fuller's Grocery was owned and operated by Marvin Fuller, brother of Wayne's dad Kinchen (known as Buck). Marvin's wife was Lucy Caulk, my mother's sister.

You've got the right location in mind Freddie, but I wouldn't say it was on a hill. It was directly across highway 74 from the Coca Cola plant, on the backside of the hill on which a Dr. Pearce's house sat.

On the Family Dollar Store, I suspect that it was Joe Levine who operated it. It just happens that it was Joe's son who created Family Dollar, and the building for the FD store appears to be the location of Levines, Joe's own store I remember from the late 50s.

I too have a William David Freeman (9/24/1886-5/21/1950) in my family tree, inasmuch as his mother Rebecca Steen is a distant relative of mine. But I list the father of this WD Freeman as William M. Bruce, if I'm not mistaken, The Diner was located at the intersection of Hamlet Avenue and Raleigh Street (diagonally across from Pop Nettles' service station). It also operated later under the name Pink Platter.

A search of Ancestry.com indicates that his family lived at 523 Hamlet Avenue in 1920 and 1930 (his father was a blacksmith with the railroad). There is also a 1930 record of him living in Raleigh as a lodger (probably as a student, but not so indicated). In 1940 he is in Marion County, Alabama with...

Can't speak to the specifics of Veep's story, but I remember seeing this act myself back in the mid 50s. The cage was in open view, so you didn't have to pay to enter a tent to witness the event. That's what I figured.
I had not remembered that he was a mail carrier though, especially our mail carrier. But I do remember what he looked like, probably through athletics (the Booster Club). Remember Jim Jr., also through athletics as he was a basketball player coming up behind my class.
