Re: 1947 Royal Crown Building

I did not notice originally that the photo was taken by Mr Yost. That has to be the same man that was a photographer, J O Yost, that lived on corner of Spring St and Wilmington streets. He lived next door to my grandparents. He had a studio in his home. He took many pictures of me as a baby, almost ...

Re: 1947 Royal Crown Building

I believe this is the building I remember on Hamlet Ave between Wilmington and Raleigh streets, perhaps across the street from what I think was the Colonial grocery store. As a child in the 1950's I spent many an hour pressed up against the glass watching the bottling assembly line. It was fascinati...

Sandspur 22 April 1942

I will have 5 Sandspurs to post from the war years that were in the estate of Mr. Joe Maurice, my dad's best friend. His daughter, Martha Jo Hitt, graciously donated copies to me that I might share them with this forum and hopefully preserve them. Joe Maurice was on the staff of the Sandspur until h...

Re: Engine & Caboose Painting project

Joe, I have a memory (1950's) of a double semaphore in the middle of the 4-track crossing at the SE corner of the old terminal. They were stacked with one set for the E/W tracks and a set for the N/S tracks. I guess what I'm trying to describe is a "quad", two facing N/S stacked on a set f...

Re: MARY LOVE CEMETERY

There is a good write up on the NC GenWeb site about how the cemetery got its name at the address below. Perhaps someone locally can substantiate this story. http://ncgenweb.us/richmond/marylove.htm The short version is that the Freeman family donated the land and were among the first buried there. ...

Re: MARY LOVE CEMETERY

Mr. Fuller - I distinctly recall the tunnel. I think you went up Hwy 177 to cross over. I remember that was the way to the icehouse also. Was the open end of the roundhouse toward the cemetery? The only reason I ask is that a Marchant image of the roundhouse in 1910 says it was taken from the roof o...

Re: MARY LOVE CEMETERY

I have visited this cemetery many times as my great grandparents are buried there (WN Cosby, Sr. and Lorena Folkes Cosby). There must have been a time when it became somewhat rundown as I recall my grandmother talking back in the late 1950's or early 60's that she did not want to be buried there bec...

Thanks for that post. I'm going to check with my dad to see if he knew him as he was also on Saipan, though in the Air Force so I'm thinking the air boys came in after the Marines and Army secured the Mariannas.

WWII Soldiers

On this Veterans Day I asked my dad if any Hamlet boys lost their lives in World War II. He told me the only three he was aware of were Arthur Smith, Jack Bundy, and Earl Hicks. He thought all died in Europe. Is anyone familiar with any others in that war that gave their lives in defense of their co...

Re: Seaboard Terminal and Hotel

Mr. Sapp - Thank you for the kind words about my grandparents. I spent many a happy day in that house and yard all through the 50's and 60's. Yes she loved her roses. That 64 Belaire was only the 2d car he had ever owned and the first with A/C. Yes they built a home over on Stacy Ave in the late 60'...

Re: Seaboard Terminal and Hotel

Thanks Malcolm. I had not seen this one in the Marchant images at UNC. As you can see, this one was rather folded, etc. and not in the best of shape. Thanks for identifying the date. I have more than a few of the Marchant images but saw no need to put them on this forum as I suppose everyone here ha...

There are also three like arches on the buildings across the street. The Hamlet Pharmacy is visible on the right d...

Re: Hamlet Snow Storm circa 1910-1920

Had I bothered checking into my other images I would see quite clearly that this is a view up Main Street from somewhere near the Terminal Hotel possibly. This is obviously a shot of the Seaboard Hotel with the terminal in the background, post-1900. I have no idea of its date and cannot recall when the Hotel was razed. Any ideas? Seaboard Airline Railroad Unknown Year

This image was taken in Hamlet in an unknown year but perhaps a train expert will know the type engine, number and perhaps its dates. I am not sure of the vintage of the auto in the background but I am guessing this to be in early 1950's. My grandfather, Walter N. "Dick" Cosby is the secon...

This pic features one of the two main streets in Hamlet for sure. I have no idea when this image was taken but estimate it to be between 1910 and 1920 just due to the apparent youth of my grandfather (Dick Cosby) seated on far right looking to his right. On the reverse of the image are the following...

Hello, I am new to the Forum so please excuse me if this has already been posted at some time. My dad, Dick Cosby, gave me this pic of the 1942 Hamlet High Football team. He and Joe Maurice identified the men in it, I believe. To the best of his knowledge, he, Joe Maurice and Burnell McGirt are the ...
