Re: John Brittingham - Bicycle
Freddie, the barber shop you referenced was the City Barber Shop if memory serves me correctly. It contained four chairs, with Mr. Stegall who ran the place in the chair nearest Main Street. The other barbers were Boyd Taylor, Ernest Meacham, and Tom Rankin. Swapped many a tale in there myself betwe...

Re: Grady Steen
Yeah, I'm sure he was quite the lady charmer; at least in his own mind. Could have used a few more years of seasoning under our dad for some attitude adjustment, but that was not meant to be. Turned out all right though; left us way too soon. I remember back in '75 when I was living in Illinois and ...

Re: Pate Lovin
Based on the directions given on the Richmond Count GenWeb site under the Cemetery heading, I would say there's a good possibility that this is Smith Cemetery.

Joe, I was told via email just recently by someone living in the area that the Freeman-Leviner Cemetery is located on the south side Osborne Road, between the community of Osborne and Nebo Church Road. Don't know what condition it is in. Is this in agreement with your information? _______________ Ly...

Re: Pate Lovin
Very interesting information Joe on Thoroughgood Pate history. I have come across that name myself in some of my research on my Quick ancestral lines, probably a descendant of the individual you highlight. Always thought it a very interesting name. The Pates were influential in the life of Richmond/...

Re: Pate Lovin
You obviously are not referring to Sallie Smith Cemetery, which has very good directions on the Richmond County US Genweb site. But I bet T12's husband can direct you to the cemetery in question, as he grew up in this community. So T12, get the ole man to describe its location so you can share it wi...

Think I can answer that. These are my parents. My parents operated (with a little help from yours truly) a little convenience store called S&S Grocery, which was located immediately west of the Coca-Cola Plant on Highway 74 east. The facility handled Esso gasoline. A trailer park was also part o...

@Terry I think I have located the person in question by searching the NC Death Records on Leviner with Rachels as key word. You have him described right Bruce. He was a smiling, congenial, courteous, happy person; don't think there was a bad bone in his body as they used to say. He was the unofficial official statistician for all Red Ram athlethic teams in my day, and I'm sure for later years as well. He was just a great...

First and foremost, the thing that I remember about The Hub was the food. I have said before that for me the Hub hamburger defined what a burger was. @ Wayne I personally think Sanitary Laundry was on or near the line of view for this shot. But I don't know that that building was tall enough for this shot; don't remember how tall that building was, but I get the sense that this shot was made from a fairly high elevation. I suspect that the pictur...

I read the history of Hamlet Hospital which is located on this site, indicating that the hospital was started in 1915 on Vance Street. I'm with you on being skeptical of the photographer's location Bruce. I don't see any way it can be Hamlet Hospital. And I don't know the history of Pansy Fetner School. You're right all around Old Timer. Coach Oldham was just a super person, period. Nothing but class. I played baseball for him in 59/60, and had several courses taught by him. And he was a native of Sanford. As for J. L. Lassiter, he had a great looking, smooth swing with the baseball bat; and mighty...

Ahh, yes. Remember that as a small boy I would be allowed from time to time to ride the family mule-drawn wagon, up from our Marlboro County farm to this location with a load of cotton to be ginned. While there, the adults might also buy some farm supplies. I was amazed at the way that big steel pip...

That is a surprising piece of information for me. But I'm sure the good jobs, and the la...
