Michael Stephen Mulkey of Newport News, VA passed away on Tuesday, August 14th, 2018 surrounded by his family. Michael was born November 12th, 1948 in Florence, SC and was raised in Rockingham, NC. Michael was the son of Ella and JC Mulkey. He inherited his love of literature, reading, language, and his empathic and tender nature from his English teacher mother, and his work ethic, grit, and determination from his football coach and school administrator father. Michael was a graduate of Wake Forest University '70 where he made lifelong friends as a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Michael graduated from George Mason Law School, where he began a long and fulfilling career as an attorney. At the time of his death he was a partner at Mulkey, Forbes, Reid, and Barton in Newport News, VA. He was a member of Hilton Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and taught Sunday School. His accomplishments as a lawyer and a substitute judge were marked by humility, compassion, and reverence for those professions. All of these traits were also present in his work as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend. He loved spending time outdoors hunting and fishing, but was just as happy cooking, reading, listening to beach music, sharing stories and telling tales. He was always quick to offer a kind word, a helping hand, or a sympathetic shoulder. To know him was to know his soft spirit, and to be his friend was to be a recipient of his boundless goodwill and caring. He was pre-deceased by his father, JC Mulkey. He is survived by his mother, Ella Jones Mulkey of Orangeburg, South Carolina; his wife of 37 years, Karan Sharp Mulkey; his children, Allison Mulkey Hund and her husband, Jonathan of Newport News, VA and his son, Michael Watson Mulkey of Denver, CO; his sister, Sharon Mulkey Grahn and her husband,Gary of Alpharetta, GA and his two grandsons, Henry and George Hund as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family, all of whom will miss him tremendously. Civically engaged throughout his life, Michael worked with and for many organizations too numerous to list. In honor of his commitment to helping others, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to a charitable organization of your choice. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 3:00pm at First Baptist Church, Newport News, 12716 Warwick Blvd. NN, VA by Rev. Kathy Gray. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
