E.A. Lackey was the man with a vision for the small town of Hamlet back around 1900. He constructed most of the buildings on today's Main Street starting with the one that houses Birmingham Drugstore. He was also the man responsible for the opera house being built, which still stands today. E.A. Lackey and his brothers, Ollie and Fred, also had businesses in several of those buildings. What you might not know is that all three brothers died within three days of each other from the great flu epidemic that swept the country back in 1918. All three are buried at Mary Love Cemetery....
