Last Edition of the Hamlet News Messenger.

Post by Jean Raby Nelson »

I have just read this for the first time and am
wondering how in the world you forgot me Bert...
Just kidding, of course. We did have some good times.
Too many have gone before us now. Barney Martin
will always be a special person in my life.
He saw things in me that I didn't see and did
what he could to teach me some life lessons.
He paid me to read Newsweek & US News & World Report
and I had to mark (circle) the words I didn't know
and then look them up in the dictionary and later
I would sit by his desk and he would call my words
out to me and I had to give him the definitations.
He "made" me listen to opera and would then tell
me the story behind the opera and at age 19 he
made me Editor of The Scottish Chief. The reason
for that was so that he could have a write up in the
North Carolina Press Assn newspaper announcing
the youngest Editor in NC was in his little kingdom.
I hope you are doing well Bert.

Interesting story Jean, I enjoyed reading it. Reminded me of Skeeter in "The Help". I've seen the movie, now reading the book. You should write a novel, bet you have one in mind!

I LOVED the Help. Just curious as to who you are? Been gone 46 years and probably wouldn't know you if we hadn't been neighbors, friends or classmates.

I loved all of Russells stories on I Remember Hamlet and use to tell him I could have written alot of them and just needed to change a few names.

I have seen The Help twice. It is a great story. We had help back in the 50s and 60s and I never knew anyone who was mean or unkind to them. We treated the few who helped us as ladies but they had some self imposed ideas.

Harold and Durwood Brown mentioned in Bert Unger's article were my Grandfather and Uncle. I remember hanging out downstairs (whenever I could get away with it)watching in amazement at them operating the teletype machines, transforming molten lead in type. My brother Joe and I dutifully delivered the News Messenger all over our side of town on our bicycles. Our first jobs! -- Mark H. Easter
