Many years ago a Hamlet police chief was killed after responding to a domestic dispute. The killer went on the run and a big manhunt followed. A small plane was sent up to try and spot the shooter. This is a two part question. Who was the officer ? What was the shooter hiding under when the plane was trying to spot him? Good luck !!!

Well you got the first part right Eddie. Chief John B. Fallow. Now comes the really tough part. What was the shooter hiding under to keep the plane from spotting him. And the Class of 64 was a great one. Old Eagle One here was a member and classmate of yours. Hope you're doing well. Haven't seen you since graduation.

Sorry sigmore, this was a good guess and you deserve credit for trying. I personally believe that no one will guess this one, but he was actually hiding under something that would be hard to believe.

Sorry Bruce, try again. I'll give you guys a little help. It was in a rural area south of Hamlet and it might have been a farm.

Okay, so I was wrong. How about hiding in a peach packing house on the south end of Battley Dairy Road?

You're very close on the area Bruce but he wasn't inside the peach packing house. I've talked with some of the old timers that was involved in the search and they all confirmed that he was hiding under something out in the open and did so as he heard the spotter plane approaching. He had to make a quick decision and this object was the closest.

Hey there Bruce. Wrong again. But man you're getting very, very hot. I'll give you a hint. It's something that had a lot to do with an old farm wagon.

Well, now I'm 0 for 3... three strikes and I'm out, but since the last one could be considered a foul tip I get another swing. So how about a haystack?

Wrong again Bruce but I've got you down for 3 foul tips and 2 more swings. I think you're gonna hit one over the wall on the next swing. You guessed an old farm wagon on one. I never saw a old farm wagon with a motor on it, so how did the old farmer get his wagon to move? And as Sherlock Holmes often told his trusted "sidekick" ------- "it's really quite elementary Watson."

Bruce, Bruce !!! OK Bruce, one more hint. This was a farm animal that pulled the wagon. Now tell me what kind of animal it was and please don't say a cow, goat or oxen. I thought you'd pick up on the phrase "sidekick." You gotta know the answer by now.  Keep on plowing Bruce.

Well Eddie, after I gave all those hints to Bruce, you came up with the mule answer, which is correct. I talked with some old guys years back who confirmed that it was indeed a mule. The shooter was in a farm field south of Hamlet in the general area which Bruce described. When he heard the plane coming he had no other option than to make a run for the underside of a mule which was standing nearby. Therefore the plane spotters couldn't see him under the mules belly and passed him over. He was later caught though in a different location. As I said, this info was conveyed to me by some old timers years ago who was involved in the search. From what I remember hearing them say was that the shooter killed his wife and her sister. Chief Fallow knew the man and considered him to be a friend and was trying to persuade the shooter to come off his porch and surrender peacefully when the guy took aim and killed the chief. Now that's the way it was told to me and others may have heard the story differently. But my story came straight from the "mules mouths."

Hey! That's not fair! I eliminate all the obvious answers and Eddie slips in sideways with the right answer! That's just like Jeopardy... the fellow with the last answer gets the prize. I quit!

The first one with the right answer wins the prize. That's the rules. I gave enough hints to give the answer. I quit too. Sorry I made someone mad...!!!

Actually, I'm not mad. I was just trying to inject a little humor into the game by teasing Eddie of guessing "mule" 8 minutes before I guessed "horse". Give us another trivia question, Eagle One and I'll play again. (Notice there are no exclamation points in this post. This one is in all seriousness).

I do know who shot Chief King, it was Mrs Skipper who also lived in Longwood Park. she ran a small Gro Store and lived in it. Chief King and some more Hamlet Policemen went to her back door. she was to go with them to Dix Hill, but when she opened the back door she fired one time at point blank range Hitting Chief King in the Chest. the bullets she used was old and only brused him, may have hit his badge first. they retreated and found out Chief King was not hurt and went back to the door she had closed and was nailing shut. that was a give away she didn't have Gun in hand and broke in and got Mrs. Skipper and took her to jail to be taken to Dix Hill[/b]
