Does anyone remember a Pender store in Hamlet? What kind of store was it and
where was it located?

Pender Grocery was located on Hamlet Avenue five stores west of Roses 5 & 10. After the end of WW II,
Pender moved across the street to a new building constructed between Hamlet Hardware and Enterprise
Hardware and became a Colonial Store. Around 1949, Colonial Store moved to west of the bus station
into a new much larger building.

I remember both Colonial Stores. What I remember about the newer one was that it had a great new invention, an exit door that opened as you approached it so that if you were carrying a bunch of groceries, you didn't have to fiddle with a door knob or pushing on the door. Loved standing on the pad that activated that door.

I worked in the new store from 1963 until 1966 for Luther Gillis.

And the new Pender Store had a hallway that let customers park in back and come in that way.

Malcolm,
I worked for Bruce Sellers, Class of '56 or rather in his place during 1956 when all of Luther's help ( most were from the class of'56 ) had taken off for the beach following the Jr-Sr @ HHS. This was in the location before they moved.
I believe that the new location opened during 1962.
