They also used henna, other berries, vinegar and crushed nut shells. The strangest dye used was for black hair, leeches mixed with vinegar.
Do you know who was required to dye their hair a certain color because of their professions?

@TR4, The filthiest stuff I have ever seen on a city sidewalk is pigeon poop. In 1956 when I went on liberty in the loop in downtown Chicago I've seen rows of mounded humps of bird droppings that extended for blocks. The rows of crap were just a few feet from the buildings, precisely the same distance the cornices extended beyond the roof. That may be the reason pedestrians used only the outer part of the sidewalks.
