I've managed to keep that same rotary dial number that was issued to my parents back in 1961---the one difference being several years ago our area code changed from (919) to (910)---I still remember from my childhood the "number please" operators---our home telephone number was 675 and the service station/taxi (POP'S) was 9119. Remember the old phones were made from bakelite, I believe and the handpiece was extremely heavy by today's standards. My memory is the local operators then were housed in the building that was demolished on Main Street next to the former Nurse's Home on the corner of Main and Lackey.

Our number was 1734 before dial phones were introduced. When the switch to dial phones was made, Southern National Bank sponsored a time of day service at 582-2601.

Our PO Box # was 469 and was the same as our phone #.

@ TR4...Good one! And there's a septic tank service here in Brunswick, Ga. that proudly proclaims in big block letters... "#1 IN THE #2 BUSINESS."
