I was about 12 this year and remember when the little league games were moved from Memorial Stadium, where the high school teams played, to the new ball field on Boyd Lake Road. What ties the first and last pictures together was that as a result of boys walking to the new ball field, some got burned when they walked across old piles of cinders cleaned out of steam locomotives from years before, as Freddie points out above. The cooled crust of cinders on the surface of the piles collapsed and the kids hit still hot cinders deep inside. Until that point I had no idea how long coal could slowly burn. There are places in West Virginia and Pennsylvania where smoke comes out of the ground from mines deep underground that have been burning slowly for years. The News-Messenger had several stories about the cinder pile fires near the old roundhouse.

Jody the place were they were putting out the fire stayed green even in the winter, from the hot cinders below I bet Wayne Fuller can back me up on that since he lived so near that spot
