FIREWORKS ARE GO: Ellerbe Lions Club rescinds jamboree cancellation
Written by Staff Report

ELLERBE — Days after cancelling its annual Independence Day festivities, the Ellerbe Lions Club is seeking public input on how to proceed.

The club announced the decision Friday on Facebook after learning of as-yet-unrevealed plans for a big fireworks show at the Rockingham Speedway and Entertainment Complex.

“After a discussion with one of the managing partners at the track at Rockingham where we were informed that they were prepared to spend at least $30,000 and maybe up to $50,000 for their fireworks display and also they were planning for free parking and free admission,we realized that we needed to do something different,” club President Lynn McCaskill said in an email Saturday that was also posted to the Ellerbe Lions Club Raceway Facebook page.

“We discussed this as club members but now we are very interested in getting input from the community at large.”

That meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 28 at the Ellerbe Lions Club.

McCaskill told the RO on Friday that cancelling the small town’s annual jamboree and fireworks display was “definitely not an easy decision.”

Hamlet City Manager Jonathan Blanton told the RO on Saturday that the City Council “agreed to forego” that municipality’s annual fireworks show during a budget planning meeting earlier this month.

While the Ellerbe Lions Club is still trying to decide what to do next, McCaskill did tell the RO last week that, overall, he thinks the show at the speedway is “going to be something good for the county.”

The RO is still waiting to hear back from officials with the speedway and the county.

FIREWORKS ARE GO: Ellerbe Lions Club rescinds jamboree cancellation

ELLERBE — Despite last week’s initial cancellation, the Ellerbe Lions Club’s Fourth of July festivities are back on schedule.

The club made the announcement on the Ellerbe Lions Club Raceway page early Friday — however, Mayor Lee Berry broke the news Thursday night following a meeting with town residents.

“Thank you Ellerbe Lions Club for going forward with the 2019 Firework jamboree on July 4th!,” Berry posted. “Small town fellowship is hard to understand unless you live in ELLERBE.”

His post was shared 217 times by Friday evening.

The club made the decision to cancel last Friday after learning that a huge Indepence Day spectacle is planned for Rockingham Speedway and members didn’t think they could go head-to-head with such an elaborate show.

County Manager Bryan Land confirmed the plans in an email to the RO on Tuesday.

Club President Lynn McCaskill called for the Thursday meeting to get the public’s input. He was unavailable for comment Friday.

The Lions have been organizing a Fourth of July jamboree—including games like a soapy watermelon race, live music and recognition of the club’s Citizen of the year, followed by a fireworks show at night — since before McCaskill joined more than 40 years ago, he told the RO last week.

Hamlet leaders have discussed foregoing that town’s annual show.

I remember back in the 1950's when the Hamlet, VFW would go to SC and buy around 200 dollars of Fireworksand had a big crowd behind the VFW watching, then the City of Hamlet came aboard and made it one of the best show's in the State
