Around 1973 or 1974 [ I don't remember which] Barney Martin sold the The Hamlet News - Messenger to a newspaper group with mostly weekly papers out of S.C. and Ga., they changed the name to The Hamlet News,
Edward Sweatt from Cheraw, S.C. was one of the owners, The Publisher was Kelvin Mackey from Cheraw and Roger Simmons was the Editor.
A few years later they sold the paper to J. Neal Cadieu, Jr., who was Owner & Pubisher of The Richmond County Daily Journal at that time.
